Origin	The theory emerged in the years following the 1918 execution of the Romanov family in Yekaterinburg, Russia, fueled by Bolshevik misinformation and the secrecy surrounding the burial site. It gained widespread attention in the 1920s when Anna Anderson claimed to be Anastasia.
Claimed	Anastasia survived the execution of her family on 17 July 1918. She escaped Russia, possibly with the help of a sympathetic Bolshevik soldier, and lived in the United States. Anna Anderson was actually Anastasia. The bodies of the imperial family were not found for decades, suggesting some may have survived.
Evidence / consensus	Scientific analysis, including DNA testing of the remains found in 1991 and 2007, confirmed that all members of the imperial family, including Anastasia, were killed in 1918. DNA testing on Anna Anderson's tissue and hair in 1994 showed no relation to the Romanov family, proving she was an impostor.
