Claimed	Earhart and Noonan were forced to land in the Japanese-controlled Marshall Islands. They were arrested for espionage and taken to Saipan. They were tortured and executed, and buried in unmarked graves. A 1960 newspaper article quotes a former Army sergeant who claimed to have seen the graves.

A classic Cold War-era suspicion. The Japanese angle makes for a good story, but the archival record doesn't support it. The graves on Saipan were likely not Earhart's.
