Summary	Proponents claim that HIV was deliberately created in U.S. military or government laboratories, possibly by the CIA, and intentionally introduced into populations such as homosexuals and African Americans. Origin	The theory emerged in the 1980s, following the first reports of AIDS in 1981, and gained traction in some communities and among certain political figures.
Claimed	HIV was manufactured in a U.S. biological weapons laboratory. The virus was deliberately released to target homosexuals and African Americans. The U.S. government injected gay men with HIV during hepatitis B vaccine trials in the late 1970s. The virus was transferred to Zaire in 1977 as part of a covert operation.
Evidence / consensus	Scientific evidence shows HIV originated from simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIV) in primates, crossing to humans through zoonosis in the early 20th century. There is no evidence of deliberate creation or release.
