Origin	Modern crop circles originated in Wiltshire, England, in 1976 when Doug Bower and Dave Chorley created a 'flying saucer nest' as a prank. Earlier scattered reports existed, but the phenomenon became prominent in the late 1970s and 1980s.
Claimed	Crop circles are created by extraterrestrial beings as messages or landing marks. They are linked to earth energies, sacred geometries, or ancient spirits. Some circles encode numerological messages about a Great Change, possibly connected to the Mayan calendar and 2012. They are evidence of secret weapons testing or other paranormal activity.
