Summary	The Loch Ness Monster, or Nessie, is a mythical creature claimed to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Sightings and photographs have been reported since 1933, but scientific evidence is lacking. The scientific community attributes reports to hoaxes, misidentifications, and natural phenomena.
Origin	The modern legend began in 1933 after a sighting by George Spicer was published in the Courier. Earlier folklore includes a 7th-century account of Saint Columba encountering a beast in the River Ness.
Claimed	A large, long-necked creature with humps lives in Loch Ness. Numerous eyewitness sightings and photographs, such as the 1934 'surgeon's photograph', document the creature. Sonar readings and underwater expeditions have detected unexplained objects or movements in the loch.
Evidence / consensus	The scientific consensus is that the Loch Ness Monster does not exist. The famous 1934 photograph was revealed as a hoax, and extensive sonar and underwater searches have found no evidence of a large unknown animal. Sightings are explained as misidentifications of seals, birds, waves, or floating logs.
