Summary	Project Artichoke, also known as Project Bluebird, was a CIA program researching interrogation and mind control techniques, including the use of drugs, hypnosis, and isolation. It operated from around 1950 to 1953 and was a precursor to MKUltra. The program involved experiments on human subjects, including unwitting tests, and explored methods to induce amnesia and control behavior.
Origin	The project originated in the early 1950s within the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, building on earlier OSS research. It was officially named Artichoke in August 1951, after being initially called Bluebird.
Claimed	The CIA conducted experiments to determine if a person could be involuntarily made to perform acts against their will, including assassination. The program used drugs such as LSD, mescaline, and scopolamine, as well as hypnosis and isolation, on human subjects, including unwitting CIA agents and prisoners of war. Subjects were often left with amnesia, and one agent was reportedly kept on LSD for 77 days. Newly discovered documents in 1977 revealed additional Artichoke/Bluebird materials not previously provided to congressional investigations.
