Summary	The Yonaguni Monument is a submerged rock formation off the coast of Yonaguni Island, Japan. Marine geologist Masaaki Kimura claims it is a man-made stepped monolith, possibly part of a lost civilization. Mainstream scientists and archaeologists consider it a natural geological formation.
Origin	Discovered in 1986 by Kihachiro Aratake, a tourism association director, while diving to observe hammerhead sharks. Claims of artificiality were popularized by Masaaki Kimura of the University of the Ryukyus.
Claimed	The formations are man-made stepped monoliths. The site is a submerged ruin of an ancient civilization. The monument is over 10,000 years old, predating known ancient civilizations.
Evidence / consensus	Geologists and archaeologists widely agree the formation is natural, created by tectonic activity and erosion in sandstone and mudstone. The Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs and Okinawa Prefecture do not recognize it as a cultural artifact.
