Origin	The legend traces to Iroquois and Mohawk stories of giant snakes, with the first European claim attributed to Samuel de Champlain in 1609, though this attribution is unsupported. Modern sightings date from the 19th century, with a notable 1819 newspaper report and an 1883 sheriff's sighting.
Claimed	A large, serpentine creature, sometimes described as 20-30 feet long or larger, lives in Lake Champlain. Samuel de Champlain documented a 20-foot serpent with a horse-like head in 1609. Over 300 sightings have been reported, including the 1977 Sandra Mansi photograph and 2026 drone footage. The creature is a distinct species, possibly a surviving plesiosaur or unknown aquatic animal.
Evidence / consensus	No scientific evidence supports the existence of Champ. The Mansi photograph has been analyzed and is inconclusive, often attributed to a log or wave. Recent drone footage is likely a sturgeon or other known fish. Eyewitness accounts are anecdotal and lack physical proof.
