Summary	The skunk ape is a cryptid said to inhabit forests and swamps in the southeastern United States, particularly Florida. It is described as a bipedal, ape-like creature with a foul odor. Mainstream scientists consider it folklore, misidentification, or hoax.
Origin	Contemporary descriptions date to European settlement of the region, with an 1818 newspaper report from Apalachicola, Florida, mentioning a 'man-sized monkey'.
Claimed	A large, hairy, bipedal humanoid, 5-7 feet tall, with reddish-brown hair and a skunk-like odor, lives in Florida swamps. Sightings have occurred across Florida, including the Everglades, Myakka State Park, Ocala National Forest, and near I-4/I-95. Dave Shealy claims to have captured footage of a skunk ape in the Everglades in July 2000. Alleged footprints and anecdotal sightings are presented as evidence.
Evidence / consensus	No physical evidence exists; the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states there is no direct evidence, and sightings may be misidentified wild hogs or bears. Mainstream science regards it as folklore, misidentification, or hoax.

Another ape-like phantom with zero specimens. The 2000 Shealy footage is a blurry figure in grass; the FWC's hog-and-bear explanation is the most parsimonious reading.
