Origin	The legend originates from the indigenous peoples of Sumatra, with reports dating back to at least the early 20th century when Dutch colonists recorded encounters.
Claimed	A bipedal primate, 80-150 cm tall, covered in short dark fur, living in the forests of Sumatra, especially Kerinci Seblat National Park. Sightings by locals, Dutch colonists, and Western scientists over the past 100 years. Witnesses describe it as having a human-like face, powerful build, and walking upright. Some reports describe it using rocks and sticks as weapons, and ripping open logs for insects. Footprints and hair samples have been collected but DNA analysis has been inconclusive.
Evidence / consensus	There is no scientific consensus that the orang pendek exists. No physical evidence such as a type specimen, clear photographs, or DNA has been produced. Skeptics suggest misidentification of known animals like sun bears or orangutans.
