Summary	Proponents claim the Hindenburg disaster was caused by a bomb planted by an anti-Nazi saboteur, possibly a Communist or a German-American acrobat named Joseph Späh. The FBI investigated these claims but found no evidence.
Origin	Immediately after the Hindenburg disaster on May 6, 1937, rumors of sabotage circulated, prompting an FBI investigation.
Claimed	The Hindenburg was destroyed by an 'infernal device' (bomb) planted on board. Communist sailors or a Communist cell in Friedrichshafen may have planted a time-bomb. Joseph Späh, an acrobat, was suspected because of his agility and odd behavior, but no motive was established.
Evidence / consensus	Official investigations by the U.S. Commerce Department and the FBI found no evidence of sabotage. The consensus is that the fire was accidental, likely caused by a spark igniting hydrogen.
