Summary	The theory of polar openings suggests that the Earth has large holes at the North and South Poles leading to its interior. Proponents claim these openings are hidden from view due to magnetic anomalies and that they serve as entrances to the hollow Earth. The idea was popularized by John Cleves Symmes Jr. in the 19th century.

Claimed	There are holes at the poles, about 1400 miles across, leading to the Earth's interior. Compasses are fooled by the magnetic rim of the holes, preventing pilots from seeing them. Admiral Byrd's statements about 'land beyond the Pole' support the existence of these openings. Expeditions have been proposed to find these openings, but none have succeeded.
Evidence / consensus	Satellite imagery and polar expeditions have shown no such openings. The Earth's poles are solid land or ice, and the magnetic field is explained by the geodynamo. Admiral Byrd's statements are often misquoted or taken out of context.
